How to build an interactive dashboard in Excel with Copilot

You will turn a plain table of data into an interactive Excel dashboard using Copilot, with charts and slicers you can click to filter. It suits anyone who can already format a table and has a Microsoft 365 account with Copilot enabled. You need your data in one clean table with clear column headers.

What you need

Steps

  1. Open your workbook and click any cell inside your data. Make sure the range has one header row and no blank rows or merged cells.

  2. Select the whole range and press Ctrl+T to turn it into an Excel Table. Tick My table has headers and click OK.

  3. Click the Copilot button on the Home tab to open the Copilot pane on the right side of the window.

  4. Type a prompt that names the goal, such as Create a dashboard showing sales by region and month. Press Enter and wait for Copilot to answer.

  5. Review the suggested charts and tables. Click Insert or Keep on the ones you want, and ask Copilot to adjust any chart that looks wrong.

  6. Arrange the inserted charts on a new sheet. Right-click a sheet tab, choose Insert, then Worksheet, and name it Dashboard.

  7. Add slicers for your main filters. Click a chart, open the PivotChart Analyze tab, choose Insert Slicer, and tick the fields you want.

  8. Drag the slicer buttons next to your charts. Right-click a slicer and pick Slicer Settings to change its name and style.

  9. Click a slicer button to test that every chart updates together. Save the file with Ctrl+S.

Tips and common mistakes

Copilot works best on a proper Excel Table, so convert your range before you write any prompt.

Keep column headers short and unique, because vague names like Column1 confuse the generated charts.

If Copilot suggests a chart you do not like, ask it to change the chart type instead of deleting it.

Save a copy of the workbook before you let Copilot add sheets, so you can go back if needed.

Questions

Do I need a paid Microsoft 365 plan for Copilot in Excel?

Yes. Copilot in Excel is part of Microsoft 365 Copilot, which is a separate paid add-on for eligible Microsoft 365 accounts. A free Excel account does not include it.

Can I build the same dashboard without Copilot?

Yes. Insert a PivotTable from your table, add a PivotChart, then add slicers from the PivotChart Analyze tab. The result is the same interactive dashboard.

Why does Copilot say it cannot read my data?

Your data is probably not in a Table or has blank header cells. Select the range, press Ctrl+T, and try the prompt again.
