What you need
Steps
Plan your layout first. List every device you want on the network: gateway, switch, access points, cameras and storage. Note how many Ethernet ports each one needs.
Mount the rack cabinet where it gets airflow and a power outlet. Fix it to studs or a solid wall so it cannot tip.
Install the patch panel and the Dream Machine Pro Max in the top rack units. Leave a gap between heat-producing gear.
Fit the Pro HD 24 PoE switch below the patch panel. Connect its uplink port to the Dream Machine with a short Ethernet cable.
Crimp RJ45 ends on your runs and test each cable with the Klein tester before plugging anything in. Label both ends.
Patch each cable from the wall or device into the back of the keystone panel, then use short patch leads to the switch ports.
Power on the Dream Machine and open the UniFi Network app. Create your admin account and let it detect the switch and access points.
Adopt each device in the UniFi console, then set up your Wi-Fi name, password and a guest network if you want one.
Add cameras and the NVR or UNAS Pro storage in the console, then check each feed and recording setting.
Fit the exhaust fans and LED lights, close the cabinet and run a speed test from a phone in each room.
Tips and common mistakes
Keep power cables and Ethernet runs on opposite sides of the rack to reduce interference.
Test every cable before you patch it in, since a bad crimp is the most common cause of a dead port.
Leave one or two free rack units and spare switch ports so you can expand later.
Switch off power at the outlet before you reach into the cabinet with tools.
Questions
Do I need a rack for a UniFi home network?
No. A rack keeps things tidy and cool, but you can start with the Dream Machine and a switch on a shelf and add a cabinet later.
Can I mix UniFi access points with my old router?
You can, but the UniFi console manages best when the Dream Machine handles routing. Put your old router in bridge mode if you keep it.
How many access points do I need?
One U7 Pro XG usually covers a small flat. Add one per floor or for thick walls, and place them centrally rather than in cupboards.
