How to build a social media Content Planner in Notion

You will build a simple Notion content planner that holds post ideas, tracks each post's status, and shows a publishing calendar. It suits creators and social media managers who are new to Notion. You only need a free Notion account and a few minutes to set up the database.

What you need

Steps

  1. Open Notion and create a new page. Give it a clear name like Content Planner so you can find it later.

  2. On that page, type /table and choose Table to add a database. This table will hold one row per post.

  3. Rename the first column to Post Title. Add a Status column as a Select property with options like Idea, Drafting, Scheduled and Published.

  4. Add more properties: a Date property for the publish date, a Select property for Platform, and a Multi-select for Content Type such as video, carousel or story.

  5. Add a Text property called Caption or Notes. Paste your draft captions and hashtags there so everything stays in one row.

  6. Switch the database view to Calendar using the view tabs at the top. Set the calendar to use your Date property so posts appear on their publish day.

  7. Create a second view called Board and group it by Status. Drag rows between Idea, Drafting, Scheduled and Published to track your workflow.

  8. Add a filter to the calendar view so it only shows posts with a date set. This keeps undated ideas out of the schedule.

  9. Create a few sample rows for upcoming posts, fill in the dates and platforms, then delete them once you get the hang of it.

Tips and common mistakes

Keep one row per post, not one per platform, and use the Platform property to note where it goes.

Use the Board view during the week and the Calendar view when planning ahead.

Add a template button inside the database so new posts start with your usual caption structure.

Back up your page by duplicating it before making big changes to properties.

Questions

Do I need a paid Notion plan?

No. A free Notion account is enough for a personal content planner with table, board and calendar views.

Can I share the planner with a team?

Yes. Use the Share button on the page and invite people by email. Check the permission level so they can edit rows.

What if I post on several platforms?

Use the Platform multi-select property on each row, or duplicate the row for each channel if you want separate captions.
