What you need

Steps

  1. Read the question twice and underline the key word, then read the printed extract closely. Decide what you think the writer is saying about the character or theme.

  2. Plan a clear line of argument before you write. A conceptualised response means your whole essay answers the question with one consistent idea, not a list of points.

  3. Open with a short introduction that states your overall argument in one or two sentences. Do not retell the plot.

  4. Support every point with a short quotation, from the extract first and then from elsewhere in the play. Keep quotations to a few words where you can.

  5. Name the method the writer uses, such as metaphor, dramatic irony or stage directions, then explain the effect on the audience and why the writer chose it.

  6. Add context that fits your point, such as Jacobean beliefs about kingship or witchcraft. One sentence tied to your argument is enough.

  7. Check your spelling, punctuation and sentence variety before you finish. AO4 rewards clear, accurate writing.

Tips and common mistakes

Learn five or six short quotations for each main character and theme so you can support any question.

Keep every paragraph anchored to the question wording; examiners reward answers that stay on task.

Time yourself at about 45 minutes for Section A, including planning and checking.

Weave context into the paragraph it supports instead of bolting it on at the end.

Questions

What do AO1 to AO4 mean?

AO1 is your response to the task and text with supporting quotations, AO2 is analysis of methods, AO3 is context, and AO4 is accurate written expression.

Do I have to write about the whole play?

Yes. Start with the printed extract, then refer to other moments in the play to show you know the whole text.

How long should my answer be?

Quality matters more than length. Aim for four or five focused paragraphs in about 45 minutes.
