What you need

Steps

  1. Read the essay question twice. Underline the instruction word (discuss, evaluate, explain), the topic, and the number of marks so you know how much to write.

  2. Plan on rough paper. List one clear point per body paragraph, then match each point to one SEQO block so no paragraph repeats another.

  3. Start each paragraph with the S, your statement. Write one sentence that answers the question directly and uses the key words from the topic.

  4. Add the E, the explanation. Give one or two sentences that unpack your statement and show why it is true, using Life Orientation terms from your notes.

  5. Add the Q, your quote, example or case study. Use something from the source text, a real South African situation, or a school or community example.

  6. Close the paragraph with the O, your opinion or link back. Say what this means for the individual or community and tie it to the question.

  7. Write a short introduction of two or three sentences. Define the main term and state the position your essay will take.

  8. Write a conclusion of two or three sentences. Sum up your main points and repeat your stance. Do not add new facts here.

  9. Check that you have enough SEQO paragraphs for the mark allocation, then proofread for spelling, full sentences and clear paragraph breaks.

Tips and common mistakes

Keep one point per paragraph, because a paragraph with two ideas usually loses marks for structure.

Use the words of the question in your statement and conclusion so the marker sees you answered the actual topic.

Do not just list facts in the Q part, since the explanation and opinion carry as many marks as the example.

Write the essay in the exam answer book in pen and cross out your plan neatly so it is not marked by mistake.

Questions

What does SEQO stand for?

It stands for Statement, Explanation, Quote or example, and Opinion or link back. Check the exact wording your teacher uses, as some schools label the last two letters slightly differently.

How many SEQO paragraphs should I write?

Look at the mark allocation and the length your teacher asks for, then write one SEQO paragraph per main point, usually three to five for a standard essay.

Can I use SEQO in other subjects?

Yes. The same pattern works in History, Geography and Business Studies essays, because it forces you to explain and support every point you make.
