Steps
Create a free Quranki account on the website, or install the iPhone or Android app. Your progress syncs across all three, so you can start on any device.
Open the Learn dashboard. Words are ordered by frequency, most common first, and arranged in stages that run up to the 99 Names of Allah.
Work through a study session. Each flashcard shows a real ayah with the word glossed, plus hints, a full translation, grammar, lemma, root and frequency.
Return for reviews when the app schedules them. FSRS, the spaced repetition algorithm used by modern Anki, decides when each word comes due.
Open the Quran reader and read a page. Words you have learned lose their translation, new words keep it, and each ayah shows how much you understand.
Check Progress to see your coverage of the whole Quran, per surah and per ayah. Use it to choose which surah to read next.
Move to Memorize (hifz) once words start to stick. A ruku unlocks for memorisation when you understand 70 percent of its words, with FSRS revision.
On a computer, try the command palette, pinned words, bookmark collections and dark or light mode. These extras are desktop only.
Read the free guides on the most common Quranic words and on spaced repetition if you want the word counts and method behind the order.
Tips and common mistakes
Keep sessions short and daily, since ten focused minutes beats one long session a week.
Clear the scheduled reviews before adding new words, or the queue grows faster than you can finish it.
Try to recall the meaning first, then open the hint, grammar and root panel to check yourself.
Follow the frequency order instead of jumping ahead to words from a surah you like.
Questions
How many words do I need to understand the Quran?
About 500 words cover roughly 80 percent of the text, and the ten most common words alone make up a quarter of it.
Is Quranki free to use?
Yes, you can start free, and your progress syncs across the web, iPhone and Android versions.
Do I need to know the Arabic letters first?
It helps to recognise the Arabic script before you start. Quranki teaches word meaning and vocabulary, so learn the alphabet separately if it is new to you.
