Steps
Open the door and look along its vertical edge for the roller cams. They are small round or oval parts that turn when you move the handle.
Find the matching roller keeps on the door frame. These are metal plates with a recessed slot that each cam locks into.
Close the door and feel along the bottom edge for cold air or light, so you know roughly how big the gap is.
Push your Allen key into the adjuster hole in the cam and turn it clockwise in small quarter turns. This pulls the door tighter against the frame.
Turn the cam counterclockwise instead if the door is already tight or the handle feels stiff to move.
Loosen the screws holding the roller keep with a screwdriver and nudge the plate a millimetre or two toward the door. Tighten the screws again.
Close the door and check for draughts and gaps. The handle should turn smoothly and the door should latch without force.
Spray a light lubricant such as WD-40 onto the cams and keeps, then open and close the door a few times to work it in.
Tips and common mistakes
Adjust in quarter turns and test the door after each one, because a small movement makes a big difference to the seal.
Wipe off excess lubricant so it does not drip onto the threshold or your flooring.
If a cam will not adjust any further and the gap remains, the keep is probably worn and needs replacing.
Make sure the door still opens easily from the inside after adjusting, so you can always get out in a hurry.
Questions
My door handle feels stiff after adjusting. What went wrong?
You have tightened the cams too far. Turn them back counterclockwise a quarter turn at a time until the handle moves freely and the door still closes flush.
How do I know if the draught comes from the cam or the rubber seal?
Run your hand along the bottom edge on a cold day. If the rubber gasket is flattened, cracked or torn, replace it. If it looks fine, the cam alignment is the likely cause.
Can I adjust the cams without an Allen key?
Some cams use a Torx or Phillips screw instead. Check the shape of the adjuster hole and use the matching bit.
