What you need

Steps

  1. Measure the rebate where the sash sits against the frame. Ecoseal kits come in 13mm and 17mm versions, so order the one that matches your window.

  2. Clean the frame and the sash with degreaser and a lint-free cloth. Let both surfaces dry fully so the parts sit flat and the fixings hold.

  3. Open the window and hold the frame half of the magnet assembly in place. Line it up with the sash edge, mark the screw holes with a pencil, then screw it down.

  4. Fit the sash half of the assembly to the moving sash, directly opposite the frame part. Keep it level and screw it down firmly without overtightening.

  5. Slide the adjustable steel plate into position. It sets how hard the magnet pulls the sash in, so start with it loose.

  6. Close the window and let the magnet pull the sash against the frame. Check that the gasket is squeezed evenly along the closing edge.

  7. Turn the micro-adjustment screws a little at a time until the sash sits tight and the seal looks even. Open and close the window after each turn.

  8. Run your hand around the edge, or trap a strip of paper in the gap, to find any draught left. Adjust the plate again if air still gets through.

  9. Check the window still locks, opens smoothly and lines up with the frame. Make one last small adjustment if the handle feels stiff.

Tips and common mistakes

Keep magnets away from bank cards, watches and medical implants such as pacemakers while you fit the strip.

Work from a stable step ladder for upstairs windows and never lean out of an open frame.

Do not overtighten the micro-adjustment screws, because small turns are enough to change the pull.

Clean surfaces matter more than force: dust and old sealant stop the parts sitting flat.

Questions

Will the kit fit my windows?

It is made for PVCu windows with a 13mm or 17mm rebate. Measure the rebate first, because the two kit sizes are not interchangeable.

Can I fit it to a wooden or aluminium window?

The kit is designed for PVCu sashes. Check with the supplier before using it on timber or aluminium frames.

Does it replace the rubber gasket?

No. It pulls the sash tighter against the existing gasket so the seal compresses properly. Replace a worn or split gasket first.
