How to add more space to Drive D in Windows 11

You will free up room on a full D drive by shrinking a partition that has spare space and extending D into it using Windows Disk Management. It suits anyone who needs more storage for games, apps or files. You need an admin account and a backup of anything important first.

What you need

Steps

  1. Back up the files on Drive D, and on any partition you plan to shrink, to an external drive or cloud folder.

  2. Right-click the Start button and choose Disk Management, or press Windows+X then K.

  3. Find the bar for Drive D and check whether unallocated space sits directly to its right.

  4. If there is unallocated space there, right-click Drive D and choose Extend Volume.

  5. If there is none, right-click a partition with free room, usually C, and choose Shrink Volume.

  6. Type the amount to shrink in megabytes, for example 10240 for 10 GB, then click Shrink.

  7. Right-click Drive D, choose Extend Volume, and click Next in the wizard.

  8. Enter how much space to add in megabytes, click Next, then Finish to apply the change.

  9. If the unallocated space is not next to D, use a third-party partition tool to move it or merge it into D.

Tips and common mistakes

Windows only extends a volume into unallocated space that sits immediately to its right, so a partition in between blocks the wizard.

If Shrink Volume offers far less space than expected, run Disk Cleanup and turn off hibernation to release locked files.

Check the drive letter and size on the confirmation screen before you click Finish, since partition changes are hard to undo.

Questions

Will I lose files on Drive D?

Normally no, because extending keeps existing data in place. Still make a backup first in case of a power cut or a wrong selection.

Why is Extend Volume greyed out for D?

It means there is no unallocated space directly to the right of D. Shrink the neighbouring partition first, or move the free space with a partition tool.

How much space can I add to D?

Only as much unallocated space as you create or already have on that disk. You cannot borrow free space from a second physical drive.
