Steps
Turn your bag inside out and measure its width and height with a tape measure. Note the depth of the base too if the bag has a flat bottom.
Add about 1.5 cm (5/8 inch) seam allowance to each measurement. This extra fabric lets you sew and turn the lining neatly.
Fold your fabric in half with right sides together. Mark the lining width and height on the fabric with chalk or a pencil.
Cut out the fabric along your marks. You should have two matching panels, or one folded piece if you cut on the fold.
Pin the side and bottom edges with right sides facing. Sew a straight seam along them, leaving the top open.
Clip the corners diagonally without cutting the stitches. This stops bulk when you turn the lining right side out.
Turn the lining right side out and push out the corners. Slip it into the bag so the wrong side of the lining faces the inside of the bag.
Fold the top edge of the lining under by about 1 cm and pin it evenly around the bag opening. Match the side seams to the bag sides.
Hand sew the folded edge to the inside of the bag with small slip stitches. Go all the way around and knot off securely.
Tips and common mistakes
Wash and iron your lining fabric before cutting so it does not shrink after sewing.
Use a fabric that matches the bag's stretch, and avoid stiff fabric on soft crochet bags.
Pin every few centimetres around the top so the lining sits flat and does not pucker.
Keep your seam allowance even, or the lining will be too tight or too loose inside the bag.
Questions
Do I have to sew the lining by hand?
No. You can machine sew the side and bottom seams, then hand sew only the top edge to the bag. Hand sewing the top gives a cleaner finish on crochet.
What fabric works best for a crochet bag lining?
A medium weight cotton or cotton blend works well. It is easy to sew, holds shape and does not slip too much inside the bag.
How do I stop the lining from showing above the bag edge?
Fold the top of the lining under by about 1 cm and sew just below the bag's top edge. Check the fit with pins before you stitch.
