What you need

Steps

  1. Write one master resume holding every role, skill, project and number you might use. Keep it as your source file and save a separate copy for each application.

  2. Read the job description twice and highlight the skills, tools and job titles it repeats. Those exact words need to appear in your resume where they are true.

  3. Put your LinkedIn profile link in the contact block at the top, next to your email and phone number.

  4. Rewrite each duty as an achievement with the X-Y-Z formula: what you accomplished, how it was measured, and what you did to get there.

  5. Add real numbers to your bullets, such as team size, percentage improvement, users served, hours saved or budget handled.

  6. Delete filler words like hardworking, dynamic or team player. Use plain, specific language that mirrors the job ad.

  7. Format in a single column with standard headings such as Experience, Education and Skills. Drop tables, text boxes, icons, photos and charts.

  8. Save the file as a PDF unless the employer asks for DOCX, and name it with your name and the role, like Priya-Sharma-Data-Analyst.pdf.

  9. Run the resume through an ATS checker or compare it line by line with the job description, then fix missing keywords and low-scoring sections.

  10. Update your LinkedIn headline, about section and skills with the same keywords so recruiters see a matching profile.

Tips and common mistakes

Never hide white text or keyword lists in the file to trick the software. Modern systems flag it and recruiters reject it.

Keep bullets to one or two lines each so the top half of page one carries your strongest, most relevant results.

Match your job titles to the ones in the ad when they mean the same thing, so keyword searches find you.

Re-check the resume against every new job description. A generic copy is the most common reason applications go quiet.

Questions

What is an ATS and why does it matter?

An applicant tracking system is software that stores and ranks applications before a recruiter reads them. It parses your file into fields and matches keywords, so a messy layout or missing terms can hide your resume.

Do I need a designer template to stand out?

No. Multi-column designs, icons and charts often break when the software reads the file. A clean single-column layout with strong numbers stands out more and survives parsing.

How long should my resume be?

One page is enough for students and freshers, and two pages are fine once you have several years of relevant work. Cut anything older or unrelated to the role.
