How to write a New Zealand CV with no local work experience

Build a one or two page CV that New Zealand employers will read, even if you have never worked in the country. It suits international students and new arrivals applying for part-time, retail, hospitality or first graduate roles. You need one real job advert to tailor it to and a list of your study, jobs and volunteer work.

What you need

Steps

  1. Pick one job advert and build the CV for that job only. Note the duties and skills it asks for, then match your own experience to those words.

  2. Put your name, phone number, email address and New Zealand city at the top. Add a short line on your visa and work rights if it helps the employer.

  3. Write a professional summary of two or three lines. Say what kind of work you want, what you are studying and one strength you bring.

  4. List your work experience with job title, employer, dates and two or three bullet points on what you actually did. Keep the newest job first.

  5. If you have no paid work, fill this section with volunteering, placements, coursework projects, family business help or casual work. Describe the tasks, not the title.

  6. Add your education, newest first: qualification, institution, dates and any relevant subjects or grades.

  7. Create a skills section with six to eight job-relevant skills, such as customer service, teamwork, communication and any software or languages you use.

  8. Keep the CV to one or two pages and leave the photo off. Use a plain font, clear headings and plenty of white space.

  9. Save the file with your name and the job title, for example Firstname-Lastname-CV.pdf, then read it once more for typos before you send it.

Tips and common mistakes

Overseas jobs and study still count, so describe them in full rather than leaving gaps.

If an advert asks for New Zealand experience, apply anyway and point to similar tasks you have done elsewhere.

Reuse the employer's own words from the job description so your CV gets past a quick skim.

Keep one master CV and save a tailored copy for each application so you do not lose track.

Questions

Should I put a photo on my New Zealand CV?

No. New Zealand employers generally expect a CV without a photo, date of birth or marital status. Keep it to contact details, experience, education and skills.

How long should my CV be?

One page is fine for a first job or a student role, and two pages is acceptable once you have several years of experience. Only include what is relevant to the job.

Can I apply when the advert says New Zealand experience required?

Yes, many people still apply. Show that you have done similar tasks before and explain your work rights clearly so the employer knows you can start.
