How to write a data engineer resume that passes ATS

You will build a one-page data engineering resume that survives automated screening and reads well to a recruiter. It suits freshers and people switching into data roles. You need your project details, a target job posting and a plain word processor to start.

What you need

Steps

  1. Read the job posting first and note the tools, job titles and skills it repeats. Your resume should mirror that language so both the ATS and the recruiter see a match.

  2. Lay out five sections in this order: contact details, a short summary, skills, work experience or projects, and education. Skip photos, tables and side columns.

  3. Write a two line summary that names your role, your years of experience or strongest project, and the stack you work in. Put it directly under your name.

  4. Build each bullet with an action verb, the task, the tool you used and a number that shows impact. For example, cut pipeline runtime by 40 percent with Airflow.

  5. List skills as plain keywords grouped by language, cloud platform and tool. Copy the exact spellings from the posting, such as Spark, dbt or Snowflake.

  6. If you are a fresher, put projects and internships above education and describe the data, tools and result. With work experience, lead with jobs and keep projects short.

  7. Remove anything an ATS cannot read: text boxes, icons, charts, headers and footers, and multi column layouts. Use one font and standard section headings.

  8. Save the file as a PDF named with your name and the role, then upload it to a free ATS checker and compare it against the job description. Fix the keywords it flags as missing.

Tips and common mistakes

Keep the resume to one page until you have roughly five years of experience.

Repeat the exact job title from the posting in your summary, since many screeners match on it.

Use numbers you can defend in the interview, like rows processed or hours saved.

Re-run the ATS check after every edit, because small formatting changes can break parsing.

Questions

How long should a data engineer resume be?

One page for freshers and up to two pages once you have several years of work history. Recruiters skim, so put your strongest evidence at the top.

Do I need a different resume for every job?

Yes, at least for the summary, skills and bullet order. Tailoring keywords to each posting is the biggest single change you can make.

Can I build it in Google Docs or Word?

Both work if you keep a single column layout with standard headings and export to PDF. Open the exported file before sending, since layouts can shift.
