What you need

Steps

  1. Start with a blank document and a clean single-column layout. Use one standard font at 10 to 12 points so the page is easy to scan.

  2. Put your contact details at the top: full name, phone number, professional email address, and city and state. Leave out your photo, age and marital status.

  3. Write a summary of two or three sentences under the contact block. Name the role you want and your strongest relevant skills or experience.

  4. List your jobs in reverse order, newest first. For each one, give the job title, employer and dates, then two to four bullet points with action verbs and numbers.

  5. Add your education with the school name, qualification and graduation date. Include your GPA only if it is strong and you finished recently.

  6. Create a skills section with six to ten job-related skills. Mix technical skills with soft skills, and use the same wording as the job advert where it is honest.

  7. Cut anything that does not support your application and keep the resume to one page. Save it as a PDF named with your first and last name.

  8. Read the job advert before you send anything and note the words it repeats. Adjust your summary and skills list for each role you apply to.

Tips and common mistakes

Keep the layout plain: no tables, text boxes or graphics that an applicant tracking system may fail to read.

Show results, not duties. Write "handled 40 customer calls a day" instead of "answered phones".

Never invent a qualification or a date. Employers check references and certificates.

Save a Word version too, since some employers ask for an editable file.

Questions

How long should a beginner resume be?

One page is enough when you have less than about ten years of experience. Recruiters spend seconds on the first pass, so keep it short and relevant.

What if I have no work experience?

Use part-time jobs, volunteering, school projects and coursework. Describe what you did and the result, the same way you would describe paid work.

Should I include hobbies?

Only if they relate to the job or show a skill the employer wants. A generic list of hobbies takes up space you could use for relevant skills.
