Steps
Clear out dead plants, old pots and fallen leaves. Empty the greenhouse so you can see the glass, frame and floor clearly.
Wash the glass or panels inside and out with soapy water. Clean glass lets in more low winter light.
Check the frame and glazing for cracks, loose panes and gaps. Repair small cracks with sealant or weatherproof tape.
Fit bubble wrap or insulation film to the inside of the walls and roof. Leave the vents and door clear so air can still move.
Fix the insulation with clips or tape so it stays put in wind. Keep a gap between the film and the glass for a little insulation.
Move tender plants inside and group them together. Raise pots off the cold floor on a bench or bricks.
Check the door and vents close properly but still open on mild days. Good airflow stops damp and mould.
Put a thermometer inside and check it on cold nights. Add a heater only if you need to keep plants above freezing.
Tips and common mistakes
Do not seal the greenhouse completely; some ventilation on mild days prevents mould.
Insulate before the first hard frost, not after, so plants are protected in time.
Use a max-min thermometer to see how cold it really gets overnight.
Questions
Do I need a heater in my greenhouse over winter?
Only if you grow tender plants that cannot take frost. Most hardy plants survive with insulation and good airflow alone.
Should I leave the greenhouse door open in winter?
Open it briefly on mild, dry days to refresh the air. Keep it closed on cold or wet days to hold in warmth.
Will bubble wrap block too much light?
It cuts some light, so clean the glass first and only cover the walls and roof you need. Leave the sunniest side clear if you can.
