How to winterize a battery lawn mower for cold storage

Battery mowers still need winter prep. You will pull the battery, clean the deck, check the blade and tuck the mower away so it starts cleanly in spring. It suits any push mower with a removable lithium pack, and needs a dry indoor spot above 50F for the battery.

What you need

Steps

  1. Mow or run the mower down until the battery sits around 50 percent charge. Do not store it full and do not drain it flat.

  2. Switch the mower off and pull the safety key if it has one. Lift the battery pack out of its slot.

  3. Carry the battery indoors to a dry spot that stays above 50F. A garage shelf or basement works, a freezing shed does not.

  4. Tip the mower on its side with the air filter and battery slot facing up. Scrape packed grass and mud off the underside of the deck with a putty knife.

  5. Look over the blade for nicks, bends and rust. Sharpen it with a file or grinder, or fit a new blade if it is badly worn.

  6. Tighten the blade bolt to the torque in your manual and spin the blade by hand to check it clears the deck.

  7. Wipe the deck and handle down, let everything dry, then fold or stand the mower on its end to save floor space.

  8. Check the battery every month or two through winter and top it back up to about 50 percent if it has drifted.

Tips and common mistakes

Never leave a lithium pack in an unheated shed, since cold and hard charging kill cells.

A blade left dull over winter tears grass in spring and stresses the motor, so sharpen it now.

Wear gloves when you reach under the deck, because the blade edge is sharp even when it is dull.

Questions

Can I just leave the battery in the mower all winter?

No. Cold storage is the main way these packs fail, so take it indoors and keep it above 50F.

What charge should the battery have in storage?

Around 50 percent. A full pack ages faster and a flat one can drop too low to recharge.

Do I need to drain fuel or oil like a gas mower?

No. A battery mower has no fuel or oil, so cleaning, the blade check and battery storage are the whole job.
