What you need
Steps
Open the Photos app, tap the photo you want to fix, then tap Edit in the top corner.
Tap the Cleanup tool in the editing toolbar to open the new AI editing options.
Pick Fast mode for small, simple objects, or High Quality mode when the area behind the object is busy.
Brush your finger over the pole, litter or person you want gone. Let go and the AI fills the gap.
Zoom in on the edges of the filled area and redo any part that looks smudged or streaky.
Drag the Cleanup brush along the edge of grass, sky or sand to extend a texture and even out the frame.
Open the Reframe tool and shift the perspective. The AI generates the missing parts to fill the new edges.
Press and hold the photo to compare it with the original, then tap Done to save your edit.
Tips and common mistakes
High Quality mode takes longer but gives cleaner results around detailed backgrounds like railings or hair.
Duplicate the photo before you start so you keep an untouched original.
Work on small areas one at a time instead of brushing over a large object in one pass.
Check the filled area at full zoom, since smudges only show up when the photo is enlarged.
Questions
What is the difference between Fast and High Quality Cleanup?
Fast mode removes an object quickly and is fine for simple backgrounds. High Quality mode takes more time and does a better job where the background has patterns, texture or straight lines.
Does Cleanup work without an internet connection?
The editing runs on the device using Apple Intelligence, so you do not need to send the photo to a server. You do need a supported iPhone running iOS 27.
Can I undo a Cleanup edit?
Yes. Open the photo in Edit and tap Revert to go back to the original, or press and hold the image to compare before you tap Done.
