What you need
Steps
Open Canva and start a new design or open an existing one. Pick the size you need, such as an Instagram post or an A4 poster.
Select an element you like, open its toolbar menu and choose Copy style. Select a second element and apply the style so both match, for example a wax seal graphic.
To make a frame, draw or pick a shape, open its menu and choose Use as frame. Drag a photo onto the shape and the image fills it.
For custom colours, click the colour swatch and choose Gradient. Add two colour stops, type a hex code for an exact shade, and drag the transparency slider for a fade.
Upload your photo and select it. Open Edit photo, choose Magic Eraser, brush over the object you want gone, then click Apply.
Use Background Remover to cut out a subject, Magic Grab to lift it off the photo, and Magic Layers to split the image into separate pieces. Most of these need Canva Pro.
Resize the finished design for other formats, or duplicate the page and change the dimensions. Then add text and adjust the font, size, spacing and effects.
Tips and common mistakes
Magic Eraser gives the cleanest result on simple, uncluttered backgrounds.
Zoom in before brushing so edges like hair and straps stay intact.
Work in small strokes and press Ctrl+Z to undo a section that goes wrong.
Export as PNG when you need a transparent background.
Questions
Do I need Canva Pro for the Magic Eraser?
Yes, Magic Eraser, Background Remover, Magic Grab and Magic Layers are paid features. You can still use the free style, frame and gradient tricks.
Can I undo a bad Magic Eraser edit?
Yes. Press Ctrl+Z on a computer or tap the undo arrow to bring the original photo back, then try again with a smaller brush.
Do these tricks work in the Canva phone app?
Most of them do, but the menus sit in different places. Photo editing tools are usually under Edit photo after you select an image.
