What you need
Steps
Pick a quiet time when your dog is tired, like after a walk. Set out clippers, styptic powder and treats within reach so you never leave the dog alone on the table.
Handle each paw for a few seconds and feed a treat. Repeat daily for a few days until your dog stops pulling away.
Place your dog on a non slip surface at a comfortable height. A towel on a table works well for small dogs.
Hold one paw firmly but gently. Press the pad to spread the toes and see each nail clearly.
Find the quick, the pink line inside light nails. On dark nails, look at the chalky white ring at the tip and stop before it.
Take small cuts, about 2 mm at a time, starting with one nail. Trim at a slight angle following the curve of the nail.
Pause and treat after every paw or every few nails. If your dog panics, stop and try again later.
If you nick the quick, press styptic powder onto the nail and hold pressure for a minute. Stay calm so your dog does.
Smooth sharp edges with a nail file. Then check all four paws and reward your dog with a big treat.
Tips and common mistakes
Trim less rather than more. It is easier to take another 2 mm next week than to fix a bleeding nail.
Never use human nail clippers on a dog. They crush the nail instead of cutting it cleanly.
Trim every 3 to 4 weeks so the quick does not grow longer and the job stays short.
If your dog is very fearful or snaps, ask a vet or groomer for help instead of forcing it.
Questions
How do I know where the quick is on black nails?
Look at the cut end. A soft grey or pink dot in the centre means you are close to the quick, so stop there. Trim tiny slivers until you see it.
What if my dog won't stay still?
Do one or two nails per session and treat after each. Short, calm sessions build trust faster than holding the dog down.
Can I use a grinder instead of clippers?
Yes, a rotary tool works well for many dogs. Introduce it switched off first, then run it briefly near the nail before grinding.
