How to transfer all data from an old iPhone to a new iPhone

Move your apps, photos, messages and settings from an old iPhone to a new one without losing anything. You can copy phone to phone with Quick Start or restore from an iCloud backup. Both phones need enough charge and a stable Wi-Fi connection.

What you need

Steps

  1. Charge both iPhones and connect them to the same Wi-Fi network. Turn on Bluetooth on the old iPhone so it can hand data over.

  2. On the old iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, then iCloud, then iCloud Backup. Tap Back Up Now and wait for it to finish.

  3. On the same backup screen, tap Show All Apps and make sure every app is switched on. This stops apps being skipped.

  4. If the new iPhone is already set up, open Settings, then General, then Transfer or Reset iPhone, then Erase All Content and Settings. This wipes it for a clean start.

  5. Turn on the new iPhone and hold it near the old one. Tap Continue on the old phone and scan the swirl pattern with the new phone's camera.

  6. Follow the prompts to set up Face ID, passcode and Apple Account. Choose Transfer from iPhone when asked how to move your data.

  7. Keep both phones close and plugged in until the transfer finishes. Large photo libraries can take a while.

  8. If you prefer iCloud, choose Restore from iCloud Backup instead and sign in with your Apple Account. Pick the backup you just made.

  9. Once setup ends, open Photos, Messages and a few apps to check everything arrived. Sign in again to any apps that ask for it.

Tips and common mistakes

Do the iCloud backup right before you start so the newest photos and messages are included.

Keep both phones on chargers during the transfer, since a dead battery can interrupt it.

Erasing the new iPhone deletes anything already on it, so back it up first if you need that data.

If Quick Start stalls, restart both phones and try again, or fall back to the iCloud restore.

Questions

Do I need to erase my new iPhone first?

Only if it has already been set up. Erase All Content and Settings gives it a clean start so the transfer can run from the beginning.

Which method is faster, Quick Start or iCloud?

Quick Start copies directly between the phones over Wi-Fi and is usually faster for large photo libraries. iCloud restore depends on your internet speed.

Will my apps and messages come across?

Yes, if every app is switched on under Show All Apps before the backup. Messages and app data transfer with the rest of your settings.
