How to thread a Singer sewing machine and bring up the bobbin thread

Thread a Singer sewing machine from the spool to the needle, then raise the bobbin thread so you can start sewing. It suits beginners using a Singer Heavy Duty or similar front-loading bobbin machine. You only need a spool of thread, a wound bobbin and your machine's manual.

What you need

Steps

  1. Raise the presser foot and turn the handwheel toward you until the take-up lever is at its highest point. This opens the tension discs so thread can seat properly.

  2. Place the spool on the top pin with the thread coming off the back or top as your manual shows. Pull the thread and hook it through the first thread guide at the top of the machine.

  3. Draw the thread down the front slot on the left side of the machine, then around the tension dial or discs. Keep the thread snug in the channel.

  4. Lead the thread up and through the take-up lever from right to left. This lever is the key part of the path, so do not skip it.

  5. Guide the thread down through any lower guides, then through the wire needle clamp guide just above the needle.

  6. Thread the needle from front to back and pull about 4 inches of thread through. If needed, use the built-in needle threader or a small scissors to trim the end.

  7. Drop the wound bobbin into the bobbin case with the thread running in the direction your manual shows. Pull the thread through the case slot and under the tension spring.

  8. Hold the top thread loosely and turn the handwheel toward you one full turn. The needle picks up the bobbin thread and brings a loop up through the needle plate.

  9. Pull the bobbin loop out with a small scissors or pin, then lay both threads under the presser foot and toward the back. You are ready to sew.

Tips and common mistakes

Always thread with the presser foot up, or the thread will not sit in the tension discs and stitches will loop.

Check the spool direction against your manual, since a spool facing the wrong way can cause tangles.

Trim the thread end at an angle before threading the needle to make it easier to push through the eye.

Keep fingers clear of the needle while turning the handwheel, and unplug the machine before changing the needle.

Questions

Why does my thread keep breaking after threading?

The thread is probably not seated in the take-up lever or the tension discs. Re-thread with the presser foot up and check the full path against your manual.

How do I know the bobbin thread is up correctly?

You should see a small loop of bobbin thread come up through the needle plate when you turn the handwheel. Pull it out and place both threads under the foot.

Does this work on other Singer models?

The general order is the same on most Singers, but guide positions vary. Follow your model's manual diagram for the exact thread path.
