What you need
Steps
Raise the presser foot and turn the handwheel toward you until the needle is at its highest point. This opens the tension discs so thread can seat properly.
Place the spool on the spool pin and pull the thread through the upper thread guide at the top of the machine.
Draw the thread down the right side of the machine through the thread guide slot, following the arrows molded on the machine.
Take the thread around the tension unit, then back up through the take-up lever from right to left.
Guide the thread down through the lower thread guides toward the needle.
On an automatic needle threader, lower the lever and let it push the thread through the needle eye, then release it. On a mechanical machine, wet the thread end and push it through the eye by hand.
Pull about 4 inches of thread through the needle and toward the back of the machine.
Wind and insert the bobbin, then turn the handwheel once to bring the bobbin thread up through the needle plate.
Tips and common mistakes
Always thread with the presser foot up, or the thread will not sit in the tension discs.
Check the manual for your exact model, since guide positions differ between mechanical and automatic machines.
Keep fingers clear of the needle and unplug the machine before changing the needle.
Questions
Do I need to thread the bobbin too?
Yes. The upper thread alone will not sew. Wind and insert the bobbin, then bring its thread up before you start.
Why does my thread keep breaking after threading?
The thread is probably not seated in the tension discs or the take-up lever. Re-thread with the presser foot up and check each guide.
Is threading an automatic machine different?
The path is similar, but a built-in needle threader does the final step for you. Just lower its lever and let it push the thread through the eye.
