What you need

Steps

  1. Before you start, decide your note budget for each task type. Write less than you think you need. The goal is to catch answers, not to record every word.

  2. For Listen and Choose a Response, write nothing. Keep your eyes on the answer choices and listen for the tone and the reply that fits.

  3. For a Conversation, note only the shape: who is speaking, the problem, and the decision. Use a few words per line, not full sentences.

  4. For an Announcement, set up four fields on the page: what, who, when and where. Fill each field with short words as you listen.

  5. Learn a small set of symbols, such as arrows for change and plus or minus signs for pros and cons. Use the same symbols every practice session so they stay automatic.

  6. For an Academic Talk, write the main idea at the top, then list the supporting points under it. Put each example next to the point it explains.

  7. If you lose the thread, stop writing and listen. Pick up again at the next clear signal word, such as however or for example.

  8. Do one short practice set, then check your answers against your notes. Mark which notes helped and which were wasted.

Tips and common mistakes

Writing too much is the most common mistake. If your pen is still moving when the next question starts, you wrote too much.

Keep the same page layout for every practice so you do not waste time setting up notes during the test.

Practise with one task type at a time before mixing all four in a single session.

Questions

Should I take notes on every TOEFL listening task?

No. Listen and Choose a Response works better with no notes at all. Save your writing for Conversations, Announcements and Academic Talks.

How do I recover if I fall behind while writing?

Stop writing and listen for the next signal word. Leave a gap on the page and continue from there instead of trying to fill in what you missed.

Are these note-taking methods official ETS rules?

No. The note budgets and symbols are teaching strategies made for this lesson, not official ETS methods.
