How to take in a loose trouser waist by hand

You can shrink a waistband that is too loose without a sewing machine. This hand-sewing fix suits anyone with basic needle skills and a pair of trousers that gap at the back. You only need a needle, thread, scissors and pins.

What you need

Steps

  1. Put the trousers on inside out and pinch the extra fabric at the centre back of the waistband until the waist fits. Pin the fold in place.

  2. Take the trousers off and mark the pinned fold with chalk. Decide whether to take in one seam at the centre back or a small dart on each side.

  3. Thread the needle and knot the end. Use a double thread for strength.

  4. Sew along the marked line with a small backstitch, working through the waistband layers only. Keep the stitches even and close together.

  5. Try the trousers on again before you cut anything. Check that you can still sit and breathe comfortably.

  6. Trim the excess fabric about 1 cm from the stitching line. Do not cut the seam you just sewed.

  7. Fold the raw edge under and sew it down with a simple whip stitch so it does not fray.

  8. Press the altered waistband with an iron on a medium setting, using a cloth between the iron and the fabric.

Tips and common mistakes

Take in a little at a time. It is much easier to remove more fabric than to undo a tight seam.

Match your thread to the trousers so the stitching blends in on the outside.

Test the fit by sitting down and bending before you trim any fabric.

Questions

Can I do this without a sewing machine?

Yes. A simple backstitch by hand holds a waistband well if the stitches are small and even. Use doubled thread for extra strength.

Will the alteration show on the outside?

If you sew on the inside of the waistband and use matching thread, the change is barely visible. Pressing the seam flat helps it lie smooth.

What if the waist is only slightly loose?

A small dart at the centre back is usually enough. Pin it first, try the trousers on, then sew.
