Steps
Draw an off-center capital I on a blank page. Make a vertical line about a third of the way from the left edge, then a horizontal line a few inches up from the bottom.
Write your lecture notes in the wide right column. Stick to the main ideas from the lecture and paraphrase in your own words instead of copying sentences.
Keep the right column short and simple. Do not try to recreate your textbook or transcribe every word the lecturer says.
After class, the video or the chapter, go back to the narrow left column, called the cue column, and pull out the main ideas and key points.
Turn the cue column into questions based on the content. Writing questions forces you to find the main ideas and the points that matter most.
Within 24 hours, return to the page and write a brief summary in the bottom section. Condense the whole outline into a couple of sentences.
To review, cover the right column, read each cue question or keyword, and say the answer out loud before checking your notes.
Tips and common mistakes
Fill in the cue column and summary soon after the lecture, while the material is still fresh.
Write questions in the cue column rather than single words, so you can quiz yourself without help.
If the summary is hard to write, your notes are probably too long, so cut them back next time.
Keep one page per lecture topic so the cue column and summary stay tied to the right content.
Questions
What is the cue column for?
It is the narrow left column. You fill it after the lecture with main ideas, key points or questions that you can use to test yourself.
Why write the summary within 24 hours?
Condensing your notes into a few sentences while the lecture is still fresh makes the content clearer in your mind and gives you a quick revision sheet later.
Does this work for reading and videos too?
Yes. Take notes in the right column while you read or watch, then fill the cue column and summary afterwards the same way.
