How to stop your iPhone battery draining so fast

Six settings on your iPhone quietly drain power all day, and most of them are on by default. This guide walks you through turning them off, from Background App Refresh to push email, then shows where to check battery health. It suits any iPhone on a recent version of iOS, and you only need the Settings app.

What you need

Steps

  1. Open Settings and tap Battery. Scroll the list to see which apps used the most power in the last 24 hours and over the last 10 days.

  2. Go to Settings, General, Background App Refresh. Switch it to Wi-Fi only, or turn it off for apps that do not need to update until you open them.

  3. Open Settings, Privacy & Security, Location Services. Set each app to Never or While Using, and turn off Precise Location for apps that only need a rough area.

  4. Tap Settings, Apps, Mail, then Accounts and Fetch New Data. Turn Push off and set Fetch to Hourly or Manually so your phone stops holding a live server connection.

  5. In Settings, Display & Brightness, set Auto-Lock to 30 seconds, turn off Raise to Wake, and lower brightness or use Dark Mode to cut screen power use.

  6. Open Settings, Notifications. Go app by app and turn off the alerts you do not need, so your screen stops lighting up dozens of times a day.

  7. Check Settings, Battery, Charging for Optimized Battery Charging and switch it on. Newer iOS versions also add Adaptive Power, which trims background work when the battery runs low.

  8. Open Settings, Battery, Battery Health & Charging and read Maximum Capacity. Below 80 percent, with shutdowns or very short run time, means it is time to book a service.

Tips and common mistakes

Change one setting at a time and use the phone for a full day, so you can see which change actually helped.

Turn on Low Power Mode when you are out for the day. It pauses background refresh and downloads for you.

Swiping apps closed in the app switcher uses more power, not less, because they reload from scratch next time.

Keep the phone out of direct sun and off hot car dashboards. Heat damages battery capacity permanently.

Questions

Will turning off Background App Refresh stop my notifications?

No. Alerts from apps that use Apple's push service still arrive. Apps that fetch their own data will only update once you open them.

Does Low Power Mode really make a difference?

Yes. It reduces background refresh, automatic downloads and screen brightness, which can stretch a low battery through the rest of the day.

At what battery health should I replace the battery?

Apple treats 80 percent maximum capacity as the point where a battery counts as degraded. If you also get sudden shutdowns or very short run time, book a service.
