How to stop window condensation in winter without new windows

Condensation forms when warm, damp indoor air meets cold glass. This guide shows how to cut the moisture, clear the water each morning and add a cheap layer of insulation, so windows stay clearer and rooms feel warmer. It suits anyone with single glazing or older double glazed units.

Steps

  1. Put a hygrometer in the room and check it daily. Aim for 30 to 50 percent indoor humidity; above 60 percent in cold weather almost guarantees fogged glass.

  2. Wipe the glass each morning with a squeegee or microfiber cloth and wring it out into the sink. Clearing the water early stops it running onto frames and sills.

  3. Open windows wide for 5 to 10 minutes once or twice a day, even when it is cold. A short blast of drier outside air works better than leaving vents to cope alone.

  4. Run the extractor fan while cooking and showering, and for 10 minutes after. Use pan lids and dry laundry outdoors or in a vented dryer instead of on radiators.

  5. Check hinges, handles and rubber seals, and replace worn gaskets. Do not block trickle vents or air bricks, and never seal the flue of a gas boiler, fire or stove.

  6. On single glazing, fit a clear shrink-film kit: tape the film to a dry frame, then shrink it tight with a hair dryer on a low setting. Bubble wrap pressed against the glass is a cheap fallback.

  7. Pull furniture and curtains back from radiators and leave a small gap between curtains and glass, so warm air can reach the window and dry it.

Tips and common mistakes

Cold glass plus damp air is the cause, so lowering humidity fixes more windows than film alone.

Shrink film must go onto a dry frame, or trapped moisture will fog the pane from the inside.

Black mould on silicone or frames means the room is too damp, so ventilate harder rather than just wiping it away.

Never drape wet towels or clothes over radiators, as that pushes moisture straight back into the air.

Questions

Will window film stop condensation completely?

No. It warms the inner surface slightly and cuts draughts, so less water forms, but the moisture is still in the room. Keep humidity in range as well.

Why is only one window fogging up?

That pane is probably colder, often because a curtain covers it or a radiator is blocked. Improve airflow and heat reach there first.

Should I really open windows in winter?

Yes, but briefly. Short bursts of airing swap damp air for drier air without chilling the walls.
