What you need

Steps

  1. Open the zipper and press the zipper tape flat with a warm, dry iron. Keep the iron off the plastic coils so they do not melt.

  2. Finish the raw edges of your fabric and mark the seam line on the wrong side with chalk. Mark the point where the zipper stop will sit.

  3. Lay the zipper face down on the right side of the fabric. Line the tape edge up with the marked seam line and pin or tape it in place.

  4. Fit your invisible zipper foot so the coil runs through the groove. Stitch from the top of the tape down towards the slider.

  5. Sew slowly and keep the needle close to the coil. Stop a couple of centimetres before the slider so you do not hit it with the needle.

  6. Pin the other side of the zipper to the second fabric piece, matching notches and edges. Stitch it the same way, from the top down.

  7. Close the zipper and check that the seam lines meet. Then switch to a regular foot and sew the rest of the seam below the zipper.

  8. Press the seam and turn the piece right side out. The zipper should sit flat and hidden inside the seam.

Tips and common mistakes

Sew a test zip on scrap fabric first so you get the needle position right before touching your good fabric.

Keep the zipper closed when you check the fit, so you can see if the two sides line up.

Do not pull or stretch the zipper tape as you sew, or the finished seam will ripple.

Use a longer stitch near the slider and shorten it once you are past the teeth for a neater finish.

Questions

Can I sew an invisible zipper without a special foot?

Yes. A standard zipper foot works, but you may need to move the needle position and sew a little further from the coil. An invisible zipper foot makes it easier to get close.

Why does my zipper look bumpy on the right side?

The tape was probably stretched or the seam line was not marked straight. Press the tape flat first and pin both sides before stitching.

Can I use this method for a cushion cover?

Yes. The same steps work for a zip in a cushion back or a bag opening, as long as you mark the seam line first.
