What you need
Steps
Measure your cushion and cut one fabric panel. Add about 1 inch to each side for seam allowance and a little extra for the boxed corners.
Fold the panel in half with right sides together. Pin the two short edges that will hold the zipper.
Sew those edges with a long basting stitch, then press the seam open. This gives you a flat base for the zipper.
Place the zipper face down along the pressed seam, centered. Pin or clip it in place on both sides.
Swap to your zipper foot and stitch close to the zipper teeth on each side, backstitching at both ends.
Turn the cover right side out and use a seam ripper to open the basting stitches so the zipper shows.
With the cover inside out, pin and sew the remaining two sides closed. Leave the zipper partly open.
Box the corners: pinch each corner so the side seam meets the bottom seam, pin, and sew straight across. Trim the excess triangle.
Turn the cover right side out through the open zipper. Push out the corners with a point turner or blunt pencil.
Insert the cushion and close the zipper. Press the cover if needed.
Tips and common mistakes
Use a zipper a few inches longer than the side so the pull stays out of the way while sewing.
Sew the basting stitch with a long stitch length so it pulls out easily later.
Clip or pin the zipper well; it shifts easily and causes wavy seams.
Keep fingers clear of the needle and unplug the machine before changing the foot.
Questions
Do I need a zipper foot?
It helps a lot. A zipper foot lets you stitch close to the teeth without catching them. A standard foot can work if you move the needle position.
What size fabric panel do I need?
Measure the cushion's width and height, add about 1 inch to each measurement for seam allowance, and add a bit more for the boxed corners.
Can I use this for outdoor cushions?
Yes. Choose a weather-resistant outdoor fabric and a metal or plastic zipper that can handle moisture.
