What you need
Steps
Wash and dry the jeans, then cut off the legs just below the crotch so you keep the seat and waistband as the bag body.
Turn the jeans inside out and sew a straight seam across the cut edge to close the bottom of the bag. Backstitch at both ends.
Cut the leg fabric into a strip about 10 cm wide and 1 m long for the strap. Fold it in half lengthwise, right sides together, and sew along the long edge.
Turn the strap right side out with a safety pin or turning tool, press it flat, then topstitch along both edges.
Pin the strap ends to the inside of the bag at the side seams, about 5 cm below the top edge, and sew them in place with a box stitch.
Measure the bag opening and cut two lining pieces to that size. Sew them right sides together along the sides and bottom, leaving a gap for turning.
Pin the lining to the bag with right sides together around the top edge and sew all the way around.
Turn the bag right side out through the lining gap, push the lining inside, and hand sew the gap closed. Press the top edge.
Tips and common mistakes
Use a jeans needle and heavy duty thread so the thick seams do not break your machine needle.
Sew slowly over the bulky waistband and side seams, and turn the handwheel by hand if needed.
Reinforce the strap attachment with a square and an X stitch so it holds weight.
Keep your fingers away from the needle and unplug the machine before changing the needle.
Questions
Do I need a sewing machine for this bag?
A machine makes it faster and stronger, but you can hand sew the seams with a backstitch using thick thread. Expect it to take longer.
How wide should the strap be?
About 10 cm of fabric folded in half gives a strap around 4 to 5 cm wide, which sits comfortably on the shoulder.
Can I add a lining pocket?
Yes. Cut a small rectangle of lining fabric, hem the top, and sew it to the lining before you join the lining to the bag.
