How to sew a quilted fabric journal cover as a handmade gift

Make a padded, quilted fabric cover that slips over a journal or paperback book. It suits beginner sewers who can use a sewing machine and a rotary cutter. You only need two fabric pieces, batting and the book you want to cover.

What you need

Steps

  1. Measure your closed journal or book: height, width and spine depth. Add about 1 inch to the height and 1/2 inch to each side for seam allowance and a loose fit.

  2. Cut two outer fabric pieces and two lining pieces to your measurements. Cut one batting piece the same size as the outer fabric.

  3. Layer the batting under one outer fabric piece, right side up. Quilt straight lines or a simple grid across it with your sewing machine to hold the layers.

  4. Place the quilted outer piece and the plain outer piece right sides together. Sew around the sides and top with a 1/2 inch seam, leaving the bottom open.

  5. Sew the two lining pieces right sides together the same way, leaving a gap of about 3 inches in the bottom for turning.

  6. Turn the outer cover right side out and press the seams. Slip it inside the lining so right sides face each other, then pin and sew around the top edge.

  7. Turn the whole cover through the lining gap. Push the lining inside and press the edges flat.

  8. Fold the cover around your journal to check the fit. Hand stitch or machine stitch the lining gap closed.

Tips and common mistakes

Press each seam as you go so the cover lies flat and the corners look sharp.

Use a walking foot or a slightly longer stitch if the batting makes the layers shift.

Trim the seam corners before turning to reduce bulk and get neater points.

Keep fingers clear of the needle and unplug the machine before changing the needle.

Questions

Can I make this without a sewing machine?

Yes. You can quilt and sew the seams by hand with a running stitch or backstitch, though it takes longer. Use a strong thread and small even stitches.

How much fabric do I need?

About 1/2 yard each of outer and lining fabric covers most journals and paperbacks. Measure your book first and add seam allowance before cutting.

Will the cover fit any book?

It fits the book you measured, plus a little extra for the padded layers. Measure again for a different size book and adjust the pattern pieces.
