What you need
Steps
Cut 2 main fabric, 2 lining and 2 interfacing pieces at 14 inches wide by 9.25 inches tall. Cut 2 batting pieces at 15 by 10 inches.
Fuse the woven interfacing to the wrong side of the main fabric pieces. Mark your quilting lines across the main panel with a ruler and fabric marker.
Layer each main panel on a batting piece, pin or baste, and quilt along the marked lines. Trim the quilted panels back to 14 by 9.25 inches.
Cut 2 handle pieces from main fabric and 2 from fusible fleece at 4 by 12 inches. Fuse the fleece, fold and press the long edges in, then fold in half and topstitch both sides.
Pin each handle to the right side of a quilted panel, matching the raw ends to the top edge and spacing them evenly. Baste in place.
Place the two quilted panels right sides together and sew the sides and bottom with a quarter inch seam. Repeat with the lining pieces, leaving a 4 inch gap in the bottom.
Box each corner by marking a 1.5 by 1.5 inch square, cutting it out, and sewing across the opening. Do this on the outer bag and the lining.
Turn the outer bag right side out and slip it inside the lining so right sides face. Sew around the top edge, then turn the bag through the lining gap.
Push the lining inside, press the top edge and topstitch around the opening. Sew the lining gap closed by machine or with a ladder stitch.
Tips and common mistakes
Use the same seam allowance for every seam or the lining will not fit the outer bag.
Quilt with a slightly longer stitch length and a walking foot to stop the layers shifting.
Press the handle seams before topstitching so the handles stay flat and even.
Keep fingers clear of the needle and unplug the machine before changing the needle.
Questions
How big is the finished bag?
About 10 inches long, 3 inches wide and 7 inches tall. It fits a standard Bible, a journal or a small planner.
Can I make this without quilting?
Yes. Skip the batting and quilt lines and use a firm interfacing instead, though the bag will be less padded.
What seam allowance should I use?
A quarter inch works well. Just keep it the same on the bag, lining and handles.
