Steps
Mark the center back of the neckline with a fabric marker. Draw a straight slit about 6 to 8 cm (2.5 to 3 in) long, ending in a narrow point.
Cut along the marked line with sharp scissors and stop at the point. Snip a tiny V notch at the base so the fabric turns cleanly without puckering.
Cut two facing strips on the same grain, fuse interfacing to the wrong side, and pin them right sides together with the back neckline, matching the raw edges.
Stitch around the neckline and down both sides of the slit with a 1 cm seam allowance. Backstitch at the notch point for strength.
Trim the seam allowance to 5 mm and clip into the curves and the notch. Turn the facing to the inside and press it flat with an iron.
Make the button loop from a 2 cm wide fabric strip. Fold it in half lengthwise, stitch a narrow seam, turn it right side out and press.
Fold the loop in half and pin the raw ends to the right side of the neckline on one side of the slit. Baste close to the edge.
Sew the button on the opposite side of the slit by hand. Check the loop fits over it before you knot the thread.
Topstitch around the facing edge 3 mm from the seam to hold it flat, then give the whole neckline a final press.
Tips and common mistakes
Make a test loop first and check it fits your button before sewing it to the neckline.
Interface both facing pieces so the neckline keeps its shape after washing.
Press each seam as you go. A hot iron does more for a flat neckline than extra stitching.
Keep the notch cut small and clean. A ragged notch shows on the right side of the finished neckline.
Questions
Can I sew this neckline without a sewing machine?
Yes. Use a backstitch for the seams and a small hem stitch for the facing. Interface the fabric so it still holds its shape.
What button size should I use?
A button 10 to 15 mm across suits most shirt necklines. Match the loop length to the button plus a little ease.
How do I stop the notch from fraying?
Clip it cleanly, trim the seam allowance close and apply a little fray check. Interfacing fused to the facing also helps.
