How to sew a lined phone bag with a zipper and strap

Make a small crossbody bag that holds your phone, cards and keys, with a zip top, a cotton lining and a webbing strap. It suits confident beginners who can already sew a straight seam. You need a sewing machine, cotton fabric, mid-weight fusible interfacing and a size 5 nylon zipper.

What you need

Steps

  1. Measure your phone and add 1.5 cm seam allowance on every side. Cut two main fabric pieces, two lining pieces and two interfacing pieces at that size.

  2. Fuse the interfacing to the wrong side of both main pieces. Press with a hot dry iron for about 10 seconds, then let the pieces cool flat.

  3. Lay the zipper face down on the top edge of one main piece, right sides together, and clip it in place. Sew along the zip tape with a zipper foot.

  4. Press the seam, then topstitch 3 mm from the zip. Repeat on the other side of the zipper with the second main piece so both halves sit either side of the zip.

  5. Fold the main bag right sides together and sew the two side seams and the bottom seam with a 1 cm allowance. Clip the corners.

  6. Sew the two lining pieces right sides together the same way, but leave a 10 cm gap in the bottom seam.

  7. Turn the bag wrong side out and leave the lining right side out. Slip the lining inside the bag, match the top edges and clip them together.

  8. Sew all the way around the top edge through the zipper tape and both layers. Turn the bag out through the gap in the lining, then hand sew or machine the gap closed.

  9. Cut the webbing to your strap length, fold each raw end under by 1 cm and sew it to the bag sides with a box shape and an X inside it.

  10. Fit the plastic snap to the front flap or add a small tab, then press the whole bag. Keep fingers clear of the needle and unplug the iron when you finish.

Tips and common mistakes

Always test the iron temperature on a scrap of your fabric before fusing, since cotton can scorch.

Clip the zipper instead of pinning it so the tape does not shift while you sew.

Backstitch a few stitches at the start and end of the strap seam so it holds under weight.

Trim the seam allowance around the zip corners to reduce bulk before you turn the bag out.

Questions

Do I need a zipper foot to make this bag?

It makes the job much easier because you can sew close to the zipper teeth. A normal foot works if you move the needle position, but the seam will sit further from the zip.

Can I make the bag without interfacing?

Yes, but the bag will be floppy and the zipper area may wrinkle. Mid-weight fusible interfacing keeps the shape and helps the fabric hold the zip.

What size zipper should I use?

A size 5 nylon zipper is a good match for a phone bag. Cut it longer than the bag opening and trim the extra tape after sewing.
