How to sew a felt witchy pumpkin ornament by hand

Make a small felt pumpkin with a tiny witch hat, all sewn by hand. You cut the pieces from a pattern, stitch and stuff the body, then add the hat and details. It suits beginners and makes a cosy Halloween decoration or a small gift.

What you need

Steps

  1. Print the Witchy Pumpkin sewing pattern, cut out the paper pieces and trace them onto felt. Cut the pumpkin panels, the hat pieces and the small details.

  2. Thread a needle with doubled thread and knot the end. Pin two pumpkin panels together with the right sides facing, or hold them with clips if the felt is thick.

  3. Sew the panels with a small running stitch about 3 mm from the edge. Leave a gap of about 3 cm on one side for turning and stuffing.

  4. Turn the pumpkin right side out through the gap and ease out the seams with a blunt pencil. Stuff it lightly with toy filling until it holds a round shape.

  5. Close the gap with a ladder stitch, starting and finishing inside the pumpkin so the knots stay hidden. Pull the thread gently so the felt does not pucker.

  6. To shape the pumpkin, sew long straight stitches from the top centre to the bottom and pull them slightly. Repeat evenly around the body for soft ridges.

  7. Sew the witch hat pieces by stitching the cone side seam with a running stitch. Turn the cone right side out and flatten the seam with your fingers.

  8. Stitch the brim to the base of the cone, then add a small band or buckle if your pattern includes one. Keep the stitches tiny so the hat holds its shape.

  9. Sew the hat to the top of the pumpkin with a few hidden stitches through the brim. Add the face, leaf or stem details, then tie off the thread inside.

Tips and common mistakes

Use thread that matches your felt so the small stitches blend into the fabric.

Stuff the pumpkin after the seams are sewn, not before, or the panels will stretch out of shape.

Keep the hat small and light, otherwise it will flop over on top of the pumpkin.

Wool or wool-blend felt gives the neatest finish, but acrylic craft felt is fine for a first try.

Questions

Do I need a sewing machine?

No. The whole ornament is sewn by hand with a simple running stitch, plus a ladder stitch to close the opening.

How big is the finished pumpkin?

The size depends on your pattern, so print it at 100 percent. A palm-sized pumpkin of about 8 cm is easy to stuff and sew.

Can I glue the pieces instead of sewing?

You can, but sewn seams hold their shape better and look neater. Fabric glue also stiffens the felt and can show through.
