What you need
Steps
Measure your closed book's height and width. Add 1 inch to the height and 4 inches to the width for seam allowance and the pockets.
Cut one outer fabric piece, one lining piece and one fusible fleece piece to those measurements.
Fuse the fleece to the wrong side of the outer fabric with a hot iron, following the fleece instructions.
Place outer and lining right sides together and pin. Sew around all four sides with a 1/2 inch seam, leaving a 3 inch gap on one long edge.
Clip the corners close to the stitching. Turn the cover right side out through the gap and push the corners out with a point turner.
Press the cover flat, fold the gap edges inward and pin. Topstitch close to the edge all the way around to close the gap.
Fold each short end inward about 2 inches to form the pockets. Pin and topstitch along the folded edge to hold them.
Slide the book's front and back covers into the two pockets. Press the spine fold so the cover sits snug.
Tips and common mistakes
Use a walking foot or a slightly longer stitch if the fleece makes the layers slide.
Press after every seam so the cover lies flat and the pockets line up.
Choose a washable cotton so the cover can be cleaned when it gets grubby.
Questions
Do I need a pattern?
No. Two rectangles measured from your book are enough. A printed pattern only helps if you want exact pocket shapes.
Can I make this without a sewing machine?
Yes. Backstitch by hand with a strong thread, but it will take longer and the seams may be less even.
Will it fit any book size?
Yes, as long as you measure each book and add the seam and pocket allowance before cutting.
