How to sew a boxed-corner zipper pouch

You will make a lined zipper pouch with boxed corners, so it stands up on its own and holds cosmetics, sewing notions or travel bits. It suits confident beginners who can sew a straight seam. You need a zipper at least 9 inches long, two fabrics and a zipper foot for your machine.

What you need

Steps

  1. Cut two outer pieces and two lining pieces, each 9 by 7 inches (23 by 18 cm). Cut a zipper at least 9 inches long, or leave it long and trim it later.

  2. Lay one outer piece right side up. Place the zipper face down along the top edge, line the tape up with the fabric edge, and clip or pin it in place.

  3. Lay one lining piece right side down on top of the zipper, matching the edges. Sew along the zipper tape with a zipper foot, backstitching at both ends.

  4. Fold the outer and lining layers back away from the zipper and press the seam flat. Topstitch about a quarter inch from the teeth through all the layers.

  5. Repeat with the second outer piece and second lining piece on the other side of the zipper. You now have a flat panel with the zip running down the middle.

  6. Open the zipper halfway. Pin the outer pieces right sides together and the lining pieces right sides together, then sew all the way around, leaving a 4 inch gap in the lining.

  7. Box the corners: cut a 1 inch square from each corner, match the raw edges and sew straight across. Do all four corners, then trim the seam allowances.

  8. Turn the pouch right side out through the lining gap and poke the corners out. Sew the gap closed by machine or by hand, press the pouch and zip it up.

Tips and common mistakes

Open the zipper halfway before you sew the sides, or you will not be able to turn the pouch right side out.

Sew slowly over the zipper teeth and keep your fingers clear, since a needle can snap on metal.

Clip rather than pin close to the zipper teeth so the pins do not bend the needle.

Press the zipper seam with the iron lifted rather than slid, so the teeth do not melt or drag.

Questions

Do I need a zipper foot for this pouch?

It makes the job much easier because it lets you sew right next to the teeth. A regular foot works if you move the needle position to the left.

What size pouch does this make?

About 8 by 6 by 2 inches once the corners are boxed. Scale both fabric pieces up or down to change the size.

Can I use a longer zipper and trim it?

Yes. Sew it in, then cut the extra tape off after the sides are sewn, or leave it long and fold the ends in.
