What you need

Steps

  1. Measure the foam cushion. Cut a top and bottom panel the same size as the foam plus 12mm (1/2 inch) seam allowance on every side.

  2. Cut the border strips as wide as the foam is thick plus 12mm seam allowance. Cut the zip border strip about 2.5cm (1 inch) wider so it finishes at the same depth once the zip is in.

  3. Make the piping. Wrap a bias strip around the piping cord, right sides out, and stitch close to the cord with a zipper foot. Make it longer than you need.

  4. Pin the piping to the right side of the top panel, raw edges together, and sew along the piping stitch line. Snip the piping seam allowance at each corner so it bends flat.

  5. Sew the zip into the zip border strip with a pocket at each end. Use a zipper foot and keep the tape flat so the teeth sit just inside the seam line.

  6. Join the border strips into a loop and sew the border to the top panel, right sides together, following the piping seam. Trim the border ends as you go.

  7. Sew the bottom panel to the border the same way, leaving the zip open. Turn the cover right side out and check the fit.

  8. Insert the foam cushion through the open zip. Close the zip and smooth the cover into the corners.

Tips and common mistakes

Cut the piping and border longer than needed and trim the excess as you sew, so the ends meet neatly.

Use a zipper foot for the piping and the zip so you can stitch close to the cord and the teeth.

Clip the seam allowance at the corners before turning the cover to get sharp corners.

Keep your fingers clear of the needle and cut the piping cord with sharp scissors on a stable surface.

Questions

What seam allowance should I use?

Use 12mm (1/2 inch) on the panels, border and piping.

How wide should the border be?

Make it the same as the foam thickness plus 12mm seam allowance. The zip border is about 2.5cm (1 inch) wider before the zip is added.

Do I need a zipper foot?

Yes, it helps you sew close to the piping cord and the zip teeth.
