How to sew a bandana tote bag with two sets of handles

Make a lined bandana tote bag with two handle options, one short pair and one long shoulder pair. This suits confident beginners who can already use a sewing machine. You need two bandanas or similar cotton squares, lining fabric, interfacing and basic sewing tools.

What you need

Steps

  1. Wash and iron your bandanas so the fabric is preshrunk and flat before cutting.

  2. Cut the bandanas into front, back and handle strips. Cut matching lining pieces and fusible interfacing for the body panels.

  3. Fuse the interfacing to the wrong side of the outer body panels with a hot iron, following the interfacing instructions.

  4. Fold each handle strip in half lengthwise, right sides together, and sew along the long edge. Turn them right side out and press.

  5. Pin the short handles and the long shoulder handles to the right side of the outer front panel, matching raw edges. Baste them in place.

  6. Place the outer front and back panels right sides together and sew around the sides and bottom. Repeat with the lining, leaving a gap in the bottom.

  7. Turn the outer bag right side out and slip it inside the lining, right sides together. Pin the top edges and sew all the way around.

  8. Pull the bag through the gap in the lining, then sew the gap closed by hand or machine. Press the top edge.

  9. Topstitch around the top of the bag to secure the lining and strengthen the handle joins.

Tips and common mistakes

Backstitch at the start and end of every handle seam so the handles do not pull out.

Clip the curves and corners before turning to get crisp, flat edges.

Use a denim or heavy duty needle if your bandanas are thick cotton.

Questions

Do I need parts 1 and 2 to make this bag?

No. This part covers the final assembly. Parts 1 and 2 show the earlier cutting and prep steps if you want the full process.

Can I make this bag without a lining?

Yes, but a lining hides the seams and makes the bag sturdier. Skip the lining step and finish the top edge with a folded hem instead.

What size bag does this make?

The size depends on your bandanas. Standard 22 inch bandanas give a medium everyday tote that fits a book, phone and small shopping.
