What you need

Steps

  1. Open Settings, scroll down and tap StandBy, then turn the StandBy switch on. Leave Show Notifications on if you want alerts to appear on the standby screen.

  2. Put your iPhone on a MagSafe charger or stand and turn it on its side so it sits in landscape. Lock the screen and StandBy appears on its own.

  3. Swipe left or right across the screen to move between the three screens: widgets, photos and the clock.

  4. Swipe up or down on the widgets screen to change which widgets you see, such as weather, calendar or music.

  5. Touch and hold a widget, then tap the minus button to remove it or the plus button to add another one from the list.

  6. Touch and hold the clock face, then tap the customize button to change the font style and colour of the time.

  7. On an iPhone Duo, fold the phone into its vertical position to get the Duo-only vertical StandBy layout and its exclusive clock faces.

  8. Set an alarm in the Clock app as usual. When it goes off in StandBy, the screen shows a glowing light effect behind the alarm.

Tips and common mistakes

StandBy only runs while the phone is locked and charging, so it will not appear on battery alone.

Turn on Night Mode in StandBy settings so the screen dims and shifts to red in a dark room.

Use a stand that holds the phone steady in landscape, otherwise the screen keeps flipping back.

Notifications only show on the standby screen if Show Notifications is switched on in StandBy settings.

Questions

Why does StandBy not turn on when I set my phone down?

Check that the phone is connected to power and locked, and that the StandBy switch in Settings is on. It also needs to sit in landscape, not upright.

Can I turn StandBy off completely?

Yes. Go to Settings, tap StandBy and switch StandBy off. The feature will no longer start when you charge the phone on its side.

What is different on the iPhone Duo?

The Duo adds a vertical version of StandBy and its own set of clock faces that other iPhones do not have. The settings and gestures work the same way.
