What you need
Steps
Use a large 63-quart storage bin as the litter box so your rabbit has room to turn around and dig.
Set the bin in the corner where your rabbit already toilets, and put an office chair mat under it to protect the floor.
Add about 1 inch of kiln-dried pine pellets across the bottom, then a thin layer of paper bedding on top.
Place a hay feeder at one end of the box or hang it just above so your rabbit can eat while it toilets.
Spot clean midweek: scoop out wet pellets, droppings and soiled hay, then add fresh bedding and hay.
At the end of the week, dump the whole bin into a bag, scrape off stuck bedding and rinse the bin.
Spray the empty bin with a pet-safe disinfectant, let it sit for the label time, rinse well and dry it fully.
Refill with fresh pine pellets and paper bedding, then top up the hay feeder and return the bin to its spot.
Tips and common mistakes
Scoop droppings once a day if you can; it keeps odor down between full cleanings.
Avoid clumping cat litter, cedar shavings and scented bedding, which are not safe for rabbits.
Keep the box in the same place; rabbits learn the routine and are more likely to use it.
If you cut an entry hole in the bin, wear gloves and sand the edge smooth.
Questions
How often should I clean a rabbit litter box?
Spot clean once midweek and do a full dump, sanitize and refill weekly. Scoop droppings daily if possible.
What bedding is safe for rabbits?
Paper bedding and kiln-dried pine pellets are good choices. Avoid clumping cat litter, cedar shavings and scented bedding.
Why does my rabbit poop outside the box?
The box may be too small, too dirty or in the wrong spot. Use a large bin, clean it often and keep hay nearby.
