What you need
Steps
Unplug the machine and read the manual section on threading. Every model routes the thread slightly differently, so follow your own diagram.
Raise the presser foot and turn the handwheel toward you until the needle is at its highest point. This opens the tension discs so thread can seat properly.
Fit a new needle, flat side facing the right way, and push it up as far as it goes. Tighten the screw firmly.
Wind thread onto the bobbin using the winder, then place the full bobbin in the bobbin case. Check the manual for which way the thread should face.
Pull the bobbin thread up through the needle plate. Turn the handwheel once toward you while holding the top thread, and the bobbin thread will come up.
Thread the top of the machine in order: spool pin, thread guide, tension dial, take-up lever, then the needle. Keep the presser foot up until you reach the needle.
Thread the needle from front to back and pull about 10 cm of thread through. Lower the presser foot.
Set a straight stitch, medium length, and sew a test line on scrap fabric. Check the stitches look even on both sides before you start your project.
Tips and common mistakes
Always thread with the presser foot up, or the thread will not sit in the tension discs.
Turn the handwheel toward you only, never backward, to avoid jamming the bobbin.
Change the needle for each new project and after about 8 hours of sewing.
Keep the manual near the machine; thread paths differ a lot between Brother, Singer and Janome models.
Questions
Why does my thread keep tangling under the fabric?
The top thread is usually not seated in the tension discs or the take-up lever. Re-thread with the presser foot up and check the bobbin is loaded the right way.
Do I need a special bobbin?
Yes. Use the bobbin type listed for your machine, since sizes differ between brands. A wrong bobbin can jam or sit too low in the case.
How do I know the tension is right?
Sew a test line on two layers of scrap fabric. The stitches should look the same on both sides, with no loops on the underside.
