What you need

Steps

  1. Turn on the new iPhone and place it near your old one. Follow the on-screen prompts, then choose whether to transfer from an old iPhone, restore from iCloud backup, or set up as new.

  2. Connect to Wi-Fi, sign in with your Apple ID, and set Face ID, a passcode and Siri when asked. Skip any step you can add later in Settings.

  3. Open Settings and turn on Optimized Battery Charging under Battery, then enable Low Power Mode when you need it. Avoid charging overnight in a hot place.

  4. Check storage under Settings, General, iPhone Storage. Delete large unused apps and videos, and turn on iCloud Photos if you want space back.

  5. Go to Settings, your name, iCloud, and turn on iCloud Backup. Tap Back Up Now to make a fresh backup, then keep automatic backups on.

  6. Open Settings, Notifications and turn off alerts for apps you do not need. Use Focus modes to silence work or sleep hours.

  7. In Settings, Privacy and Security, review Location Services and turn off tracking for apps that do not need it. Set App Tracking Transparency to ask apps not to track.

  8. Install a few starter apps from the App Store, such as a password manager, a notes app and a weather app. Delete the ones you will not use.

  9. Explore hidden features like Back Tap under Accessibility, Touch and Back Tap, and set it to open an app or take a screenshot.

Tips and common mistakes

Do the backup before you wipe or trade in your old iPhone, not after.

Turn off Background App Refresh for apps you rarely open to save battery.

Use a passcode of six digits or more, and never share your Apple ID password.

Check that Find My iPhone is on so you can locate or lock a lost phone.

Questions

Can I set up a new iPhone from an iCloud backup?

Yes. During setup choose Restore from iCloud Backup and sign in with your Apple ID. Pick the most recent backup and keep the phone on Wi-Fi and power until it finishes.

How long does a new iPhone setup take?

The basic setup takes about 15 minutes. Restoring apps, photos and messages from a backup can take an hour or more depending on your connection and backup size.

Should I set up as new or restore from backup?

Restore from backup if you want your photos, messages and app data back. Set up as new if the old phone had problems or you want a clean start.
