What you need
Steps
Download the budget spreadsheet file to your device. Save it somewhere you can find again, such as your Documents folder or iCloud Drive.
Open the file in Apple Numbers. If a Read Me tab appears, read it first so you understand how the tabs connect.
Go to the Budget tab and set the month and dates in the header row. Check that the date format matches your region.
Set the currency for the sheet so all amounts display correctly. Use the cell format options in the Format sidebar.
Enter your income for the month in the income rows. Add each source on its own line with the amount and date received.
List your bills and fixed expenses with their due dates and amounts. Include rent, utilities, subscriptions and loan payments.
Add your savings and debt goals as their own rows so they count as planned spending rather than leftovers.
During the month, log each expense in the expense section as you spend. Pick a category for each entry.
Open the breakdown view to compare planned versus actual spending by category. Look for categories that are running over.
When the month ends, duplicate the sheet or reset the amounts to start a new month. Keep last month's copy for your records.
Tips and common mistakes
Log expenses the same day you spend, because catching up at month end is where budgets usually fall apart.
Set the currency and date format before typing numbers so you do not have to redo entries later.
Leave a small buffer row for unexpected costs instead of squeezing every dollar into a fixed category.
Keep one copy of the template untouched so you can start fresh months without rebuilding it.
Questions
Do I need to buy the template to follow along?
The walkthrough uses the creator's Simple Budget Spreadsheet template, but the same steps work in any Numbers budget sheet. You can build the rows yourself in a blank Numbers document.
Does this work on iPhone and iPad?
Yes. The template is built for Apple Numbers, which runs on Mac, iPad and iPhone, so the same tabs and cells work on all three.
How do I start a new month without losing old data?
Duplicate the sheet or save a copy before clearing the amounts. That keeps last month's record while giving you a clean sheet to fill in.
