What you need

Steps

  1. Put both AirPods in the charging case and close the lid. Wait about 30 seconds, then open the lid.

  2. On your iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap Bluetooth and find your AirPods in the list.

  3. Tap the info button next to your AirPods, then tap Forget This Device and confirm.

  4. Keep the lid open and press and hold the setup button on the back of the case for about 15 seconds.

  5. Watch the status light. It flashes amber a few times, then flashes white. Release the button when it turns white.

  6. Pair the AirPods again by holding the open case near your iPhone and following the on-screen prompt.

  7. For AirPods Max, unplug the charging cable and press and hold both the noise control button and the Digital Crown for about 15 seconds.

  8. Release when the status light flashes amber, then white. The headphones have now been reset.

Tips and common mistakes

A reset is not the same as a restart. Try turning Bluetooth off and on, or recharging the case, before you reset.

Hold the setup button long enough. Letting go too early leaves the AirPods paired to your old device.

After the reset you must pair the AirPods again like new ones, so have your Apple ID password ready.

Keep the case lid open during the reset or the status light will not show the amber and white flashes.

Questions

Will a reset delete my music or settings?

No. A reset only clears the AirPods pairing and returns the earbuds to factory settings. Your music and Apple ID stay on your phone.

What does the flashing amber light mean?

Amber means the reset is in progress. When the light flashes white, the AirPods are reset and ready to pair again.

Do I need to reset before selling my AirPods?

Yes. Unpair them from your devices and do a factory reset so the new owner can pair them cleanly.
