What you need
Steps
Park on a flat, level surface and switch off the engine. Wait a few minutes so the battery and engine bay cool down.
Open the bonnet and locate the battery on the left side of the engine bay. Pop off the plastic cover over the terminals if your Kona has one.
Loosen the negative terminal clamp with a 10 mm wrench and lift the black cable off the post. Tuck it aside so it cannot touch metal.
Loosen and remove the positive terminal clamp the same way, then move the red cable clear of the battery.
Undo the hold-down bracket bolt at the base of the battery tray. Keep the bolt and bracket in a safe place.
Lift the old battery straight up and out. Batteries are heavy, so use both hands and keep your back straight.
Clean the tray and brush the terminal clamps until the metal is bright. Check the new battery matches the old one in size and terminal position.
Lower the new battery into the tray with the terminals in the same spots. Refit the hold-down bracket and tighten the bolt so the battery cannot move.
Connect the positive clamp first and tighten it, then the negative clamp. Give both a firm wiggle to confirm they are tight.
Start the engine and check the dashboard for warning lights. Reset the clock and radio presets if they were lost.
Tips and common mistakes
Always disconnect the negative terminal first and reconnect it last to avoid short circuits.
Wear safety glasses, since a dropped wrench across both terminals can spark or cause the battery to burst.
If your Kona has stop-start, check the new battery is an AGM type of the same capacity.
Take the old battery to a recycling centre or parts shop, never the household bin.
Questions
Will I lose my radio and settings when the battery is disconnected?
Yes, the clock and radio presets usually reset. Use a memory saver plugged into the OBD port if you want to keep them.
Do I need to reset anything after fitting a new battery?
On most Konas the car relearns idle and window positions on its own. If the stop-start light stays on, drive a short trip and it should clear.
How do I know which battery to buy?
Match the group size, capacity and terminal layout printed on the old battery label, or check the parts list for your model year.
