Steps
Check that the battery is really failing. Slow cranking, clicking on start, frequent jump starts, a Stop/Start Unavailable message or a battery warning light all point to a weak battery.
Park on level ground, switch off the engine and let the car sit for a few minutes. Put on safety glasses and gloves before you touch anything under the hood.
Open the hood and find the battery on the driver side of the engine bay. The space is tight, so remove any plastic covers or intake pieces sitting over the battery.
Look at the negative terminal. On stop/start models a small battery sensor clips onto it, so handle that part gently and do not pry it off with a screwdriver.
Loosen the negative terminal clamp and lift the cable away from the post. Tuck it aside so it cannot spring back and touch metal. Then loosen and remove the positive terminal.
Unbolt the hold-down bracket that keeps the battery in place. Lift the old battery straight up and out, keeping it level because it is heavy.
Set the new battery beside the old one and compare them. Match the group size, terminal layout and case shape, and use an AGM battery if your Renegade has the stop/start system.
Lower the new battery into the tray with the terminals in the same position. Refit the hold-down bracket and tighten it so the battery cannot slide, but do not crush the case.
Connect the positive terminal first and snug the clamp. Then fit the negative terminal with the sensor in place and tighten it firmly without over-torquing the sensor.
Start the engine and watch the dash for warnings. Reset the clock and radio, run the one-touch windows up and down, then drive the car so the stop/start system can relearn.
Tips and common mistakes
Always disconnect the negative terminal first and reconnect it last, so a wrench cannot short the battery to the body.
Replace like for like: a stop/start Renegade expects an AGM battery, and a standard lead acid one will not last.
Never hammer or twist a terminal clamp onto a post, since that cracks the battery case and loosens the seal.
Take the old battery to a parts store or recycling centre rather than putting it in household waste.
Questions
Why is the stop/start system not working after the swap?
The system often needs a short drive and a few start cycles before it works again. If the message stays on, check that the new battery is the correct AGM type and fully charged.
Do I have to reprogram anything after replacing the battery?
Usually not. The clock, radio presets and one-touch windows may reset, and you can set them again in a minute. Some models relearn the stop/start system on their own as you drive.
Can I use this guide on a Fiat 500X?
Yes, the 500X shares the same platform and the battery job is very similar. Check the battery size and type for your own car before buying a replacement.
