What you need

Steps

  1. Park on level ground, loosen the wheel bolts, then jack up the front and support it on axle stands. Open the brake fluid reservoir cap and lay a rag around it.

  2. Remove the wheel. Prise off the anti-rattle spring from the caliper with a flat screwdriver and set it aside.

  3. Pull off the two guide pin caps. Undo the two 11mm hex guide pin bolts and keep them safe.

  4. Unclip the brake pad wear sensor connector from the caliper and separate it.

  5. Lift the caliper off the pads and hang it from the suspension spring with a hanger or bungee. Never let it hang by the hose.

  6. Undo the two 15mm caliper carrier bracket bolts and remove the bracket.

  7. Remove the T50 rotor retaining screw and pull the old rotor off the hub. Clean the hub face with brake cleaner.

  8. Fit the new rotor and tighten the retaining screw. Refit the caliper bracket and torque the 15mm bolts to 115 Nm (85 ft-lbs).

  9. Compress the caliper piston fully with a piston tool. Fit the new pads, slide the caliper on and torque the 11mm guide pins to 58 Nm (43 ft-lbs).

  10. Reconnect the wear sensor, refit the dust caps and anti-rattle spring. Refit the wheel, lower the car and pump the brake pedal until it feels firm.

Tips and common mistakes

Watch the brake fluid level as you compress the piston, and siphon some out if it nears the top.

Clean and grease the guide pins lightly so the caliper slides freely.

Pump the pedal before driving, and bed the new pads in with gentle stops for the first 200 km.

Check the torque on every bolt with a wrench, since loose caliper bolts are dangerous.

Questions

Do I need to replace the rotors too?

Only if they are below the minimum thickness, scored or warped. Measure with a micrometer or have a shop check them.

Can I reuse the old wear sensor?

Yes, if it is intact and the warning light is not on. Replace it if the wire or clip is damaged.

How do I know the pads fit my car?

This job covers 2016 to 2020 XF, 2017 to 2021 XE and 2017 to 2020 F-Pace base trims. Check your VIN with a parts supplier before buying.
