What you need
Steps
Park on level ground, set the parking brake and loosen the lug nuts half a turn before lifting. Chock the rear wheels.
Raise the front of the truck and support it on jack stands under the frame. Never work under a car held only by a jack.
Remove the wheel and set it aside. Spray the caliper bolts with penetrating oil if they look rusty.
Unbolt the caliper from the bracket and hang it from the suspension spring with a bungee or wire. Do not let it dangle by the brake hose.
Remove the caliper bracket bolts, then pull off the old rotor. If it is stuck, tap the face with a rubber mallet.
Clean the hub face with a wire brush and brake cleaner so the new rotor sits flat. Fit the new rotor and reinstall the bracket to the torque spec.
Compress the caliper piston with a C-clamp or piston tool, opening the bleeder slightly if needed. Fit the new pads with a little brake grease on the backing plate edges.
Slide the caliper over the new pads and bolt it down. Spin the rotor to check it turns freely without rubbing.
Refit the wheel and lower the truck. Repeat on the other side.
Press the brake pedal several times until it feels firm, then test at low speed in a safe area before normal driving.
Tips and common mistakes
Replace pads and rotors in pairs, one axle at a time, so braking stays even.
Do not get brake grease on the pad friction surface or the rotor face.
Pump the pedal before driving, because the first press after a pad change can go to the floor.
Check brake fluid level after compressing the pistons and top up if it drops.
Questions
Do I need to machine or turn the new rotors?
No. New rotors come ready to fit. Just clean the protective oil off the surface with brake cleaner before installing.
How tight should the caliper bolts be?
Use the torque spec in your Land Cruiser service manual, usually around 25 to 35 ft-lb for the caliper and higher for the bracket. A torque wrench avoids stripping them.
Can I reuse the old pads if they still have life?
You can, but new pads bed in better against new rotors. Mixing worn pads with fresh rotors can cause uneven braking.
