How to replace a running toilet fill valve with a Fluidmaster 400H

A running toilet often means the fill valve is worn out. This guide shows you how to swap the old valve for a Fluidmaster 400H, set the height and hose, and check for leaks. It suits beginners with basic hand tools.

Steps

  1. Turn off the water at the shut off valve behind the toilet. If that valve is broken or stuck, turn off the water at your home's main valve instead.

  2. Flush the toilet and hold the lever down until most of the tank water drains. Soak up the rest with a sponge and wring it into a bucket.

  3. Unscrew the water supply line from the bottom of the old fill valve. Use pliers if the nut is tight. Catch any drips with a towel.

  4. Remove the old fill valve from the tank. Dry fit the new 400H and check the height before you cut anything.

  5. Measure so the top of the 400H sits about 3 inches above the top of the flush valve. The top of the flush valve should also be about 1 inch below the tank lever.

  6. Adjust the height by turning the black column clockwise or counterclockwise. Cut the hose to length so it does not catch on the tank lid.

  7. Push the hose into the clamp and clip it onto the flush valve. Slide the new valve into the tank and hand tighten the nut on the bottom.

  8. Hand tighten the water supply line to the bottom of the 400H. Turn the water back on at the shut off valve.

  9. Check around the nut and supply line for leaks. Flush once and watch the tank refill, then adjust the tank and bowl water levels with the levers on the 400H.

Tips and common mistakes

Hand tighten the tank nut and supply line only. Over tightening can crack the plastic or strip the threads.

If the shut off valve will not close fully, replace it or use the main valve before you start.

Keep the hose short enough that the tank lid does not pinch it, or the valve will not shut off.

If the toilet still runs after the swap, check the flapper and its seal before buying more parts.

Questions

Do I need to drain the whole tank?

Yes. Get most of the water out by holding the flush lever down, then sponge out the rest so you can work without a mess.

How do I know the new valve is the right height?

The top of the 400H should be about 3 inches above the flush valve, and the flush valve about 1 inch below the tank lever.

What if water leaks after I turn it back on?

Turn the water off again and check the tank nut and supply line. Hand tighten them a little more and look for a crossed or missing washer.
